    During WWII when ladies' nylons were in short supply they sometimes resorted to gravy browning to stain their legs and it is said that they also used the brown staining quality of the inside of fresh walnut shells too, bofore drawing an artificial line up the back of the leg to represent a seam.

    Gravy browning is basically caramel.. I imagine that cannot have been too pleasant. But if needs must..
