For anyone interested in how the poor people of the parish were cared for before the introduction of the National Health Service, I would like to recommend Peter Higgingotham’s website which provides an in depth study of the history of the workhouse.

Whether a genealogist has ancestors or not in the workhouse this well illustrated website is fascinating and well worth a visit.

    Thank you for that Anne.

I’m sure many of us have family stories from earlier generations about the Workhouse, though often they seem to have been forgotten due to a sense of fear or shame, however unjustified.

The workhouse was perhaps the beginning of a social security system, however crude it might appear to us today. In any event, it is an integral part of our social history and no doubt Peter Higginbotham’s web pages will be of interest to many here.
