    Notes
    • These notes from findagrave.com:

Much of the information on this family was obtained from William H. Cadman.

There was opposition to the marriage of William and Elizabeth because the Worrall family was fairly well-off and the Cadmans were not; thus, they left home, went to Sheffield (about 12 miles from Mosborough) and were married in the \"Old Church.\" The newlyweds spent a few weeks in Liverpool where they were visited by the groom\'s mother but not by the bride\'s parents. Then they purchased tickets through to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and boarded a ship to set sail for New York; from there they traveled via Buffalo, New York and Alliance, Ohio where they had to change trains for Pittsburgh, finally arriving in December 1856. (See for an account of several miraculous experiences that the Cadmans had on their journey.) Their only known relatives in this country were Elizabeth\'s two uncles, William (Billie) Hodgson and Willis Hodgson.

\"Our progenitors, William Cadman and Elizabeth, runaways from good homes in Mosborough, Derbyshire, England settled in the Monongahela Valley in 1856 and spent their days at various places along the valley. I think they first lived in what was called Brownstown, somewhere in or near Pittsburgh, I believe on the South Side. Later in their life they lived at Mingo just below Monongahela and then at Black Diamond at the upper part of Monongahela. At this place they were in the store business. They went bankrupt, leaving them in $600 debt. It was a large debt at that time, for these venturous runaways from a good home in England. ... In some way, father was given an experience that caused him to move to the Walton Coal Mine district. Here he and my brother Solomon were given good work. They soon got out of debt, which was caused by their failure in the store business. ... They moved into a log house owned by Mose Thompson. Their neighbors were the two Heath families and the Hoffmans. This was early in 1870. ... During this stage of the life of our parents, father bought a lot on Hog Back Hill in Jefferson Township, near West Elizabeth, Pennsylvania and built a home there. While building the foundation, brother Joseph was born. They built a stable first which was used to prepare meals in for those who were working on the house. My two oldest sisters, Ellen and Sarah Ann, who were very young, were assisted by a neighbor Mrs. Hallas in this work. This house is still standing and is occupied by my niece Alice Griffiths. It was in this house that the two youngest boys were born: William Henry in December 1876 and Alma Bickerton in November 1878. Our boyhood days were spent in this house on Hog Back Hill. It was also in this house that father died in November 1905 and mother in March 1904. Mother had suffered a stroke on Christmas Eve of 1894. She lived for over 9 years, most of the time in a wheelchair.\"
